In response to the recent decision of the International Court of Justice regarding the temporary measures imposed on Israeli occupation due to its aggression against the Palestinian people in Gaza, Algeria has called for an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council. The Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reported that its mission in New York immediately initiated intensive consultations upon receiving instructions from President Abdelmajid Tebboune.
The Algerian delegation, led by its Permanent Representative to the United Nations, participated in a mini-meeting at the Algerian mission, joined by representatives from Palestine and South Africa. Following this meeting, Algeria's Permanent Representative, Amar Benjamal, took part in an emergency gathering of the Arab Group in New York, convened to discuss the practical steps to be taken following the International Court of Justice's decision.
During this meeting, Ambassador Benjamal briefed his Arab counterparts on Algeria's intention to request a meeting of the United Nations Security Council on the matter next Wednesday
The representatives expressed their full support for Algeria's proposal to convene this meeting.
The International Court of Justice, in a session held in The Hague, Netherlands, issued a ruling two days ago instructing the Israeli occupation to take measures to prevent acts of genocide against Palestinians and improve the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip
This decision emerged in response to a request from South Africa for provisional measures in the case of "genocide" filed against the occupying entity. The court's directive underscores the urgency of addressing the dire circumstances in Gaza and holds Israel accountable for preventing further atrocities against the Palestinian population.
Algeria's proactive engagement on the international stage reflects its commitment to upholding justice and ensuring accountability for violations of human rights
As the nation calls for collective action within the United Nations Security Council, the international community awaits the deliberations that will unfold in the upcoming emergency meeting, with the hope of advancing a just resolution to the longstanding conflict in the region.
