Nagelsmann's Contract Extension Sparks Controversy in Germany

Julian Nagelsmann, head coach of the German national football team, may be offered a contract extension in the coming months after Bernd Neuendorf, president of the German Football Association (DFB), refused to deny reports suggesting that he wants to extend the young coach's contract until 2028.

A report published this week by the German newspaper *Bild* revealed that the German Football Association has already begun talks with Nagelsmann about a new deal, just months after extending his initial contract.

Originally, Nagelsmann's contract was set to run until the European Championship, which was hosted by Germany this past summer, but it was later extended through to the 2026 World Cup.

Neuendorf told *Leipziger Volkszeitung*: "We were very happy to extend Nagelsmann's contract until the 2026 World Cup, after it was originally meant to last until the Euro 2024. We will discuss everything else calmly at the right time."

Nagelsmann took over as head coach following the dismissal of Hansi Flick in September of last year, and he has since rejuvenated the team, which had been unlucky to lose to Spain in the quarterfinals of the European Championship. Spain would go on to win the continental title this year.

He also led the German team to qualify for the quarterfinals of the upcoming UEFA Nations League, which kicks off in March, before starting the European qualifying campaign for the next World Cup, set to take place in the U.S., Mexico, and Canada.

Under Nagelsmann’s leadership this year, the German national team has shown impressive performances. They achieved 10 victories, 4 draws, and 1 loss, scoring 35 goals and conceding 10.
