Sam Altman: OpenAI Now Focuses on Superintelligence

Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, announced that the company has reached a fundamental understanding of how to build artificial general intelligence (AGI) and is now focusing on the development of superintelligence.

Altman emphasized that superintelligence has the potential to radically reshape the world by accelerating scientific discoveries and innovations beyond human capabilities. While he did not disclose specific details about the company’s future plans, he hinted that the first manifestations of this technology could emerge within the next few years. He also confirmed that OpenAI has not yet introduced models representing AGI.

In his personal blog, Altman reviewed the company’s journey since its founding nine years ago as a non-profit research lab, evolving into a leading tech company after the launch of ChatGPT in November 2022. He revealed that the chatbot was initially named “Chat With GPT-3.5.”

Discussing the company’s future, Altman reiterated that OpenAI now possesses a fundamental understanding of building AGI systems. He added that the first applications of AI in the workforce might begin by 2025. Experts believe that creating a general-purpose intelligent agent capable of handling complex real-world challenges will require a certain level of AGI—something OpenAI has not yet achieved.

Altman stated, “We love what we are offering today, but we are looking forward to a bright future. With superintelligence, we will be able to accomplish anything, and hyper-intelligent tools will accelerate scientific discoveries and innovations at an unprecedented scale, exceeding our current capabilities and leading to increased abundance and prosperity for humanity.”

Although his remarks might sound like science fiction, Altman stressed that the company is confident it will achieve superintelligence in the coming years. He also highlighted the importance of handling this technology cautiously to maximize benefits and ensure it serves everyone.

Currently, reports indicate that OpenAI is working on developing the GPT-5 model, reportedly codenamed "Orion." The company has also announced the o3 series of advanced AI models, which are expected to be released later this year.
