Van Dijk: Facing Brentford at their stadium is difficult, and Nunez made the difference

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk spoke after his team's victory over Brentford in the Premier League on Saturday night.

Liverpool secured a last-minute win through striker Darwin Nunez, with a 2-0 score in added time.

Van Dijk said in his comments to BBC Sport: "It was extremely difficult, facing Brentford at their stadium is tough."

He added: "The way they press and the quality they have in counter-attacks, we played well, kept working, and continued trying. In the end, Darwin Nunez made the difference with two goals."

He continued: "We saw that in two consecutive matches, especially in the second half against Nottingham. It’s also the quality of Brentford, who will exploit you in counter-attacks. We played well and restricted them."

On his teammate Nunez, he confirmed: "Since the day Darwin arrived, he brings a lot of energy. As a striker, you are judged by your goals, especially at a club like Liverpool."

He pointed out: "It might be harder than ever. He works hard and learns. Today, he contributed significantly to the win, and it was deserved. He left his mark on the match today. It’s extremely important; we need everyone at their best. Today was his day."

Van Dijk added: "Today was a small piece of the puzzle. We must continue. Every win is a big result, especially when the teams around us are so strong. We need to remain consistent, win matches, and perform well."

He concluded: "There are no easy games. Every match, the teams are very good. They want to play their best game against us, just as we want to play our best game against them. If no one is prepared for a tough journey, this season will definitely be that way."
