Zuckerberg Announces New Changes to Facebook and Instagram

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced on Tuesday that the company's social platforms would undergo significant changes in the coming period, emphasizing that "it’s time to return to our roots."

In a video posted on his official social media accounts, Zuckerberg pledged to prioritize freedom of speech following the return of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump to the White House.

He explained that, starting in the United States, fact-checkers would be removed, and instead, the platforms would rely on "community notes" created by users, similar to the approach of Elon Musk's platform, X.

Platform X relies on other users to add warnings and context to controversial posts and tweets.

Zuckerberg stated that Facebook, Instagram, and Threads would "significantly reduce the amount of censorship" and recommend more political content on their pages.

He highlighted that "Meta’s fact-checkers were politically biased and eroded trust rather than building it."

The Meta CEO also revealed that the company's content moderation teams would be relocated from California to Texas, "where there is less concern about team bias."

Meta's platforms serve over 3 billion users worldwide. Zuckerberg added that the company would also eliminate "a range of restrictions on topics like immigration and gender that don’t align with mainstream discourse" and "work with President Trump to counter governments worldwide that attack American companies and push for more censorship."
