Manchester United coach Ruben Amorim stated that Lisandro Martinez's injury is "serious" after the defender was forced to leave the field on a stretcher during Sunday's Premier League defeat to Crystal Palace.
Martinez, 27, was replaced by his fellow center-back partner Matthijs de Ligt with eight minutes remaining in regular time at Old Trafford after appearing to injure his knee.
The Argentine international immediately signaled for a substitution and had his head in his hands as the medical team treated him on the field. He appeared visibly upset when being carried off the pitch.
When asked by reporters in the press conference if it was a bad day for the club, Amorim replied: "Yes, for the team and the fans. We lost the match, we improved in some areas, we controlled the game better, had more possession, but we suffered from two goals that we could have avoided."
He added: "Lisandro Martinez is very important for us, not just as a player but also as a personality, and I think it's a bad situation. Let's wait and assess things."
He continued: "We'll see in the coming days, but I think it’s a serious case. He’s not only a great player but a strong character in the locker room, and right now, it’s tough for us, but it's time for us to help Martinez, just as he helps us every day."
Amorim concluded: "When you're a player, you know when things are serious. Let's hope for better days for him, and we’re here, as I said, to help him in this difficult moment."
When asked about the possibility of signing more new players after the arrivals of Aiden Hevyn and Patrick Dorgo, Amorim said: "We’re trying everything to improve the team, without making the mistakes of the past, and trying to balance the urgency of the moment."
